What is a facial essence and do you need it in your routine?

Okay, so it feels like we’re writing about why you need to add something to your skincare routine every week. But know that it’s because we discover something great and we love sharing it with you. This week, it’s a facial essence and all the amazing things it can do for your skin.

Originally deriving from the infamous 10-step Korean beauty routine, this lightweight, hydrating liquid is a pretty good third step – after toner, before serums – to add to our own routines as well.

But how is it different to toner, you ask? Good question. A toner is designed to remove the last traces of dirt, grime and makeup after cleansing, but often contains alcohol so it can be drying. The essence comes in to save the day, often with more active ingredients to target problem areas, therefore penetrating deeper into the skin. It basically acts as a primer for all those good ingredients from the serum and moisturiser you’ll apply after.

Also, the trick is to put a few drops on the palm of your hands and pat it into your face. Don’t waste your precious essence drops on cotton rounds.

So do you need an essence in your routine? This writer votes yes. Especially if your skin leans towards being drier – which let’s be honest is all of us in this blistering cold winter – and also if you’ve got problem areas like uneven or dull skin.

We’ve put together a list of our tried and tested ones for you to check out below.
