Valentino Shows Resort ’18 Collection in New York City

Continuing the trend of designers showing away from home – Dior in Calabasas, Louis Vuitton in Tokyo – Valentino has shown their Resort 2018 collection in New York City overnight. The Rome-based fashion house debuted a collection that was their most relaxed yet and the urban surroundings of the big apple (and the downtown loft of our dreams that they showed in) made it feel perfectly at home.

This is the first solo cruise collection for creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli – after Maria Grazia Chiuri left to take over the reigns at Dior – and he’s evidently tried to build a more wearable Valentino to contrast with the beautiful gowns he shows. Think pullovers, jersey dresses, wide-legged denim – there was definitely a sports luxe vibe going on – miles away from their usual ethereal, elaborate and dreamy gowns. But it still is a Valentino show after all, and there were still over the top floor length numbers in the lineup though – one was even hot pink velvet.

The shades of bright green, hot pink and floral patterns on bright technical fabrics were hard to look away from but there were still classics in the mix with trenches, white shirts and jeans. These relaxed designs paired back with sneakers and flat slides showed a different side of Valentino but also one that never forgot their roots – the detail right down to the piping on the scuba dresses were meticulous. It was just a little bit more downtown NYC and a sign that they can adapt to their casual customers as well.
