This year is the year. The year we’re jetting off to new and exciting destinations and exploring the world. We’re sure there are a thousand new year’s resolutions each year to travel more but the world has never been more accessible. While the July/August Euro vacay and Japan in May to see the cherry blossoms are fun and beautiful, they are tried and tested formulas. Why not break out of the mould in 2018 and try some hot new destinations before the rest of the crowds get there?
We’ve teamed up with our friends from Peregrine Travel Centre SA to put together a list to help you get inspired.
Everyone thinks of something different when Mexico is mentioned, and it’s understandable because there’s so much of it to see and explore. From its incredibly rich history – think the Aztec ruins of Teotihuacan – to the delicious traditional street food in Mexico City (contrary to popular belief there are more than just burritos and tacos) to the breathtaking coastline of the Yucatan Peninsula – the trick is to travel south from Cancun into Playa Del Carmen and Tulum. Mexico has a little something for everyone.
Explore the highlights of Mexico on this 15 day tour with Geckos Adventures from just $1,260pp*.
Cuba is definitely not new, but with recent changes in international relations, it’s like a whole new (and beautiful) part of the world has opened up. The timeworn yet magical sites, the sounds of the historic Havana Vieja and wonderous colours of their dilapidated buildings and classic American cars will transport you to another time period. This fascinating destination needs to be seen to be believed.
What Greek Islands? Croatia is the new Adriatic hub to be travelling – and sailing – into for the upcoming Euro summer. Fly into the bustling seaside city of Split and visit a UNESCO World Heritage site and admire some Roman monuments before jumping on a seven day sailing tour which will stop off at some of the best islands the country has to offer. Then head down to Dubrovnik and walk the limestone cobbled streets to capture the essence of old town Croatian life.

Head on to Kelowna and Banff if you want to keep the skiing going but if not, pop down to Vancouver to start your city tour, and don’t forget to try the poutine.

It’s time, guys. It’s time to see some (or a lot) of llamas and finally tick the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu off your bucket list. Other than the famed pilgrimage site, there are also many other incredible sites and ruins to see and explore Peru’s 5000-year history. You also can’t go to Peru without taste testing their delicious cuisine, from fresh ceviche to delicious chocolate made from cacao grown right there in the Amazon. The key is to get active and say yes to all the rafting, zip lining and bike riding there is to do.
But remember, Inca Trail permits are limited and if you want to experience this incredible destination (especially during peak season) you’ll need to apply for your permits early. Contact the consultants at Peregrine Travel Centre SA who can assist you with anything you’d like to know about the Inca Trail.
