It’s no secret, we’ve been fans of The Wolf Gang since the beginning. It was a much needed injection of unique pieces and vibrant colours into our accessories cabinet, as well as a great addition to the fashion crowd working out of Adelaide. Creation of super woman, Vanessa Pearce, the brand has gone from strength to strength – beautiful campaigns, popping up State side, on-brand collaborations – but the latest venture has been the biggest so far, expanding her beloved range into ready-to-wear and footwear.
Best known for their beautiful bags, and for a while the crochet bikinis, the gang have worked really hard on their latest collection ‘Sous Le Soleil’ and making sure that their new creations are just as special and good in quality as their already existing archive. “This range has been such a labour of love for us with the introduction of footwear and apparel, so it’s that same butterflies-in-tummy feeling as our first launch,” Vanessa says.
“The idea has always been to design pieces the team and I love and want to wear, so to see others loving them too is a pretty special feeling”.
As for the decision on why they wanted to branch out into apparel, Vanessa says that it’s always been a part of the dream and it was just the right time. “We’d started sketching and print designing in late 2016, but this was also an extremely busy time for our small team, with the AU market growing and hype building in the US, plus my second baby on the way,” she explains. “We were also needing to grow our team, and the stars aligned in mid-2017 when Sophie, designer and now Head of Production came on board. It’s really been a love story ever since!”
‘Sous Le Soleil’ arrives in full this September but was launched to press at the beautiful La Porte Space in Sydney earlier this year. With the help of another local lady, Georgia Zogopoulos of GGPR, they created the perfect little event which saw Sydney’s style set turn up.
“We feel incredibly blessed to have such a beautiful network of supporters,” Vanessa says. “The collection was so well received by buyers, media and influencers alike in attendance, and I’m so excited for its public release this September”.
The brand has also taken off in the United States, with a strong following on social media as well as a successful pop-up shop with US mega brand Sonix on Melrose Avenue. Not to mention celebrity endorsements. “The support we’ve received from the US has been so humbling, seeing Alessandra Ambrosio wearing our Soneva Belt Bag was definitely a pinch-myself moment,” Vanessa says. “We’ve been back to the States three times in the past year and have around 70 stockists worldwide now. It’s pretty surreal watching the brand gain momentum across the globe in such a short period of time”.
Apart from being the ultimate businesswoman, Vanessa is also the mother of two beautiful children. She was pregnant and gave birth to both of them all while starting up the label and driving its success. So we had to ask how she manages a work/life balance that seems to elude most people. “I’ve been pregnant for most of this journey – seriously,” she laughs. “I would be lying if I didn’t say it was stressful at times, but having kids has helped prepare me for many of the challenges that come with starting a new business”.
“I’ve learned a lot about myself from them; where my strengths and weaknesses are, what’s worth stressing about and what’s not, and the importance of quality time. They have definitely grounded me,” she continues.
We also ask Vanessa what her favourite pieces are from the upcoming release and what we should look out for. “I’ve been living in our Alcase button front top in cream spot (released in September), usually worn back with one of our Zodiac silk scarves, which are so versatile and feature an in-house custom print,” she says. “I’m also crushing on our Avalon backpack in vegetable tanned leather, and you’ll usually see me wearing our newly released Portofino tassel heels because they are the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever owned”.
Going forward, Vanessa and the team are working hard on their next range, which she says “will stay true to our recognisable earthy palette and beautiful natural fibres”. we’re also told that the new collection will be available at some really “iconic Australian stores this summer, and in the Northern hemisphere”.
At the time of the interview, Sydney-based photographer Daphne Nguyen had just shot their latest campaign editorial featuring Dominique Elissa and Isabell Andreeva. As usual, it is beautiful and reflects the brand’s aesthetic and which we’re excited to share below alongside images from the press event at La Porte Space.
