From what started as a Christmas gift from Sharni to her girlfriend (and now business partner) Nikki back in 2013, Oh Deer Sugar has grown into a fully-fledged business churning out over 160 products to their ‘deers’ Australia-wide. The food-focussed theme of the bath and body products stemmed from Sharni’s dream to become a pastry chef. She now showcases this passion through what she dubs as “food for the skin” – think: waffle bath bombs, chocolate block soaps and cupcake bubble bath.
Both Nikki and Sharni are vegan, so when establishing the brand they had animals and the environment at the forefront of their minds. Sharni says the use of animal ingredients or even animal-tested ingredients are so unnecessary. “Plants are amazing – we don’t need to harm animals to look, smell or feel good,” Sharni says.
They started selling their signature scrubs and sweets at every market around Adelaide and through their online store before opening their first brick and mortar in 2015 with the help of Renew Adelaide. It didn’t take long for the business to boom, with both girls needing to resign from their day jobs to focus on Oh Deer Sugar full time. They’ve since outgrown the initial shop front to take on a commercial lease and move into a bigger, brighter space inside Regent Arcade where they’re constantly introducing the brand to new customers everyday thanks to the foot traffic of Rundle Mall.
To keep up with the high demand from their devoted deers, they’ve opened a warehouse in the suburbs where their crew can dispatch all their online orders out (and they haven’t even launched international shipping yet!) Although they’ve expanded their team, it’s still Nikki and Sharni handcrafting all of their products – but kitchen employees are definitely next on their list! “We need the extra hands especially coming into Christmas as this is our busiest time,” Sharni says.
As they start to gear up for the silly season (yes, this includes Santa bath bombs), they have a few other plans up their sleeves. They’re currently expanding their range to include more day-to-day essentials and have begun exploring the possibility of a second store for 2018 – surely the first expansion of many more ‘Non-Edible Bakeries’ to open around Australia.
