A brand new celebration of First Nations designers and artists will land in 2020 when the inaugural National Indigenous Fashion Awards are held in Darwin.
An initiative of the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair Foundation, the awards have grown out of the Darwin Art Fair’s annual ‘Country to Couture’ fashion showcase which has gone from strength to strength since launching in 2016.
In its first year the NIFAs will cover six categories, including Cultural Adornment and Wearable Art, Textile Design, Community Collaboration, Special Recognition, Environmental and Social Contribution and Fashion Design with a combined prize pool valued at $60,000.
“DAAFF has been in deep conversation with Indigenous fashion creatives to develop the concept of the National Aboriginal Fashion Awards, and we are now so excited to present it in 2020,” Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair Foundation Chair Franchesca Cubillo says.
“This award will showcase talented Indigenous Australian artists, and share their amazing fashion and textile designs to the world.”
The NIFAs will be officially launched on 5 August, and livestreamed around the country via NITV’s social media channels.
