There’s no question that Adelaide is blessed with some seriously talented individuals; from athletes to musicians – you name, we’ve got it. And our gifted make-up artists are no exception. From self-taught cosmetic queens that have perfected the smoky eye, to academy trained artists that can contour with their eyes closed.
Here at CLIQUE Mag we’ve rounded up a list of our favourite Adelaide make-up artists for our exclusive ‘Make Up Artists of Adelaide’ feature. Our second feature make-up goddess is none other than THE Millie Herd.
Known as Adelaide’s ‘Brow Queen’, Millie Herd – with the magic of her tweezers and brushes – can transform anyone into an absolute queen. And with a résumé that reads everything from Jamie Sortino, Thestyleset.com to Clique Mag – you know you’re in good hands with Millie Herd.
We caught up with the talented makeup and brow specialist to talk all things make-up, beauty trends, tips, tricks and so much more.
How did you get involved in make-up artistry?
I studied a Diploma of makeup at Media Makeup Academy; following my studies I worked at Inglot and Mac Cosmetics. I took the plunge and went out on my own, opening my studio in 2011 and haven’t looked back! I found having a mentor was the most valuable part for me to grow and learn as an artist, and I was fortunate enough to have Dale Dorning mentor me in those early years – something for which I’m still very grateful for.
What are the top three products you can’t live without?
1. Everyone knows my obsession for fix + spray from MAC
2. A lip stain, all time favourite is the Benefit Benetint
3. Tinted brow gel… Just tinted everything!
The New Year always signifies a new wave of trends and looks for us to obsess over. What are your favourite beauty trends of 2017?
Skin is in fashion this year! Nothing beats beautiful, healthy and radiant skin.
Grungy metallics and chrome eye-shadows are going to be huge. Unfinished eyes paired with minimalist skin will also be big: no more contouring and baked on powders! Also, out with the liquid and matte lip-glosses and in with the statement lips: glitter lips, ombre and multidimensional lips this year.
What are the biggest and most common beauty faux pas you come across?
Bronzing your entire face! Bridge of the nose, temples and under your cheekbones only!
I know it’s tempting to see your makeup last until the next day but sleeping in your makeup causes pimples! Not only that, but makeup settles in your pores and enlarges them over time which can be permanent and ageing.
Applying your makeup in the wrong lighting is the biggest blunder. Natural light is best or similar lighting to the destination you’re heading to.
They say the good skin acts as the canvas for a beautiful make-up look. What can people do to achieve a flawless completion?
Invest in good skin care at a young age, prescribed specifically for your skin. A good home skincare regime is so important! Also ensure you use a high SPF to prevent UV damage. Your future self will thank you for it! I’ve recently discovered Rationale and it’s changed my life!
As a make-up artist, what is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
I get to make people feel beautiful daily!! Career versatility is also super rewarding. There’s always an opportunity to change it up and evolve. I am in love with the ride so far!!
What are some of your favourite projects you’ve worked on? (e.g. photo-shoots, memorable clients, formals ect.)
A recent work opportunity with Peppermayo – a Sydney based fashion company – saw me flying to the Fiji Islands for a week-long trip & photo shoot. Each crewmember was a pro and we even had Alexis Ren, an Insta-famous model fly in from LA for it.
In your opinion, what celebrities always slays the make-up game?
Margot Robbie… need I say more?
Where can people find you?
Currently at my little Parisian inspired studio on King William Road, otherwise who knows what’s on the cards for this year…
