Levi’s Presents is 5-week program of free music from up and coming local acts every fortnight at the Rundle Mall store. Levi’s have always supported and nurtured up and coming musical talent, most recently with the launch of The Levi’s Music Prize, the biggest music prize in Australian history, helping emerging Australian artists to get a leg up on the local and international stage.
Adelaide’s own, Hot Mess, are next in line to play at Levi’s Rundle Mall. The four-piece collective describe their sound as sad emo rock with some fuzzy bits, and we couldn’t agree more. Their live set is something that you don’t want to miss if you’re into rocking out to some pop punk on a Friday night. This might even be your last chance to see them live for a few months as they are taking a break until the end of the year. We had a chat to the band to hear more about what they have in store for tonight’s gig.
The Levi’s Presents Series has been going on for a little while now, and your time has finally come! What are you most excited about?
Playing in the mall is going to be pretty awesome. But also rocking my new jeans (laughs) I’ve needed a new pair for a long time.
How would you describe your sound?
Sad emo rock with some fuzzy bits.
What can audiences expect from your live set?
A lot of awkward stage banter and some overly emotional singing.
I love hearing the stories of how bands get together, what’s the story of Hot Mess’ inception?
Well, Mariah is married to my brother and we work together as well. I asked her to play some songs with me. I asked Renee to drum in it because she’s just the nicest person ever, and Mariah knew Bernie through work as well. We set out from the beginning to have this band as a platform for women in music without them necessarily having to be the token ‘chick singer’ or whatever.
How did the name, Hot Mess, come about?
Umm no idea. Maybe it has a relation to our live show (laughs).
What have been some of your highlight gigs?
Playing for International Women’s Day was very special to us. Also playing with our interstate band mates was sick and playing at Jive with Die! Die! Die! was also pretty great.
What does the rest of 2018 have in store for you guys?
We’re going to have a split coming out with World Sick at some point. But we are also going to have a bit of break for a bit while Renee has a little baby! But we will also try and play a few more shows towards the end of the year.
Hot Mess are playing live tonight, Friday, April 6 at Levi’s, 76 Rundle Mall, Adelaide.
