For the past 6 years, Tom Wright found himself working in the construction and arboriculture industries, before pursuing his dream of creating a fashion label. “From a young age I had always loved fashion and was always up to date with the latest trends,” Tom says. “I just imagined it would have been amazing to see people wear something I designed.”
Tom was born in Manchester, England and moved to little old Adelaide at the age of 13. “After living in Adelaide for 11 years, I still haven’t swapped my trainers for thongs, and certainly wasn’t about to trade in my trackies for boardies any time soon,” Tom says.
With the rise of streetwear – being worn by celebrities and influencers all over the world – Tom saw his opportunity. “I began to recognise the lack of streetwear brands operating in the Australian fashion market, and that’s when GROWN ROYAL was born.”
GROWN ROYAL sees the fusion of high-end fashion and streetwear. The menswear brand aims to offer something unique and different to everything else on the market, with specific fits and minimal designs. “I get a lot of my inspiration from the UK, US and Japanese street cultures and styles,” Tom says. “The main designers I look up to are Jerry Lorenzo and the Heaton brothers”. And as for his favourite style of the first collection? “Definitely the track pants, I’d wear them every day if I could,” Tom says.
The lookbook created for Tom’s debut collection is, put simply, a work of art. “I wanted to shoot the lookbook at an outdoors location that gave the illusion we could be anywhere in the world,” Tom says. “I must say photographer Vanessa Burton and model Josh Deane created that effect beyond my expectations. I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out!”
With hopes that GROWN ROYAL will become Australia’s leading streetwear brand, Tom wants his brand to stand for positivity and a can do attitude, hoping to inspire the next generation to follow their dreams. Now, he’s turning towards his second collection, which we hear will be dropping soon.
