Introducing: Bamboo Babe

Periods, they’re an unavoidable fact of life and between cramping, cravings and all manner of pains in between, their impact on the globe isn’t so pretty either. Luckily, South Australian-based Bamboo Babe is tackling the environmental impact of our monthly cycles one pad at a time with a biodegradable, bamboo-based alternative.

While periods already come with and array of achy downsides to our bodies and minds, it’s an unfortunate fact that they aren’t great for the environment either. The conventional sanitary pad takes up to 800 years to break down in landfill, an astonishing number that most period-having people are unaware of.

Most conventional period products are made with the presence of plastics. Ill-fitting, bulky and not always that absorbent, it’s no surprise that Bamboo Babe owners George and Karyn Harris were fed up.

“These negative experiences stayed in my mind and when the opportunity came to make a difference I jumped at it, knowing how it would help,” explains George.

Harnessing the absorbent, hypoallergenic and antibacterial properties of bamboo, the brand promises a super light, comfortable fit without the environmental footprint. “The benefits of bamboo have been widely known for some time but hadn’t been utilised in personal hygiene pads,” explains George.

“Bamboo is fifteen percent more absorbent than cotton, so we knew we could make a dry pad,” he says. “Armed with this knowledge, we wanted to take things a step further, so we incorporated a plant-based top sheet derived from corn, which allows moisture to wick away quickly”.

But it doesn’t stop there, Bamboo Babe also offer a cycle subscription service to ensure you’re never caught off guard.

The team deliver pads to your door every 28 days, three or six cycles, it’s up to you. All orders are customisable, so you can choose to mix and match across the panty liners, normal, super and night-time varieties depending on your individual needs.

“Having made many ‘emergency dashes’ to the supermarket over the years, we knew there had to be a better way,” says George.

To top it all off, 5% from each sale is donated to the Childhood Cancer Association. So, what are you waiting for? Say goodbye to nasties and hello to a fresher feeling and saving the planet with Bamboo Babe.
