Adding to our ever-growing shoe obsession is Melbourne based sandal label, A.EMERY. Carefully designed in Melbourne and handcrafted in India, A.EMERY is known for their neutral toned minimal leather designs.
Quickly becoming an Australian go-to for on trend summer footwear, A.EMERY is created for the modern woman who appreciates beautiful timeless designs. We caught up with founder Anna McLaren to learn more about her start-up, the design process and her personal favourite from the collection.
Why did you begin A.EMERY?
The concept of A.EMERY is something I had been considering for many years. Sandals are such a staple piece in the Australian summer wardrobe, but I found myself spending the entire Australian winter searching for the best pairs in the northern hemisphere market. The styles I liked that had minimal, clean and considered designs were in a higher price bracket than I wanted to spend so this hole in the market is what drove me to start A.EMERY.
I began to really invest my time into A.EMERY in late 2016. From this point on, it was quite a fast transition with just one year passing until we launched in December 2017. While there are many ups and downs of a start-up journey, the most challenging part of the process was finding a supplier that met our high standards and quality requirements.
How did you come to the name A.EMERY?
Everyone asks: who is A.EMERY? The answer is that she is an enigma, she is who we design for. She shifts and changes like all modern women with her ideals and perspectives changing with her experiences. She is powerful and vulnerable; a thinker who believes in who she is, and she has a firm understanding of her own personal style.
Your label has a distinct minimalist aesthetic, is this a reflection of your own style?
Most definitely. The tag line for our business is ‘pared back sandals for the urban and holiday environment’ and I embrace this ethos in my own wardrobe. I like to invest in pieces that are effortless, can be styled in a multitude of ways and that can take me from a summer holiday to a meeting in the city with just some simple styling adjustments. Full length straight black pants, vintage denim, t-shirts and slip dresses is pretty much what I live in.
Talk us through the design process.
The design ethos for A.EMERY will always focus on minimal, timeless and considered designs. I always consider the way the sandals sit on the foot; it’s important that they are flattering and elongate the silhouette of the body. Sometimes the design process starts with a silhouette and other times it’s based on the materials and leathers.
Your products are handcrafted in India. Do you maintain a sustainable and ethical approach?
Yes, we work with a fully audited and accredited factory in New Delhi [that] places a strong emphasis on the importance of looking after their workers – from wages through to gender equality and non-discrimination in the workplace. As for sustainability, all of our shoe boxes and shipping boxes are recyclable and no plastics are used in the packing process, from factory through to customer.
What’s your favourite style in your collection?
It is tough to pick a favourite, but the pair I reach for the most is the Lola in Black or Honey as they just go with everything. Coming in second place would be the Paige in Black.
What’s next for A.EMERY?
There are so many things happening, but we are most excited about our launch into the international market next year.
