A Guide to Independent Hair Salons in Adelaide

Its no secret that Adelaide is home to some of the best hair salons in the country, but what you might not know is that there’s a lot of independent talent here too. A lot of hair stylists are taking the plunge and going out on their own, eager to create a brand for themselves and continue doing what they love, but in their own way.

We got to know five of the best independent hair stylists in Adelaide, and we (of course) linked their Instagram accounts for your viewing pleasure.

Since October 2015, Ashleigh has been a freelance hairstylist working under the name Ashleigh Wareing Hair. In January, she received the keys for her salon Brond. and after renovating, opened mid February – and let me tell you, the space is stunning.

Why did you decide to go out on your own?

I decided to go out on my own about four months after finishing my apprenticeship. I knew I wanted to work for myself as I wanted to be a session stylist – I didn’t have the flexibility to achieve this goal working full time for someone else. I decided to start by ‘renting-a-chair’ this means virtually sub-contracting from another salon. This was an appropriate first step for me to take to get a taste of running my own business on a smaller scale – baby steps!

What’s your favourite part about your job?

I love making people feel and look amazing. Hair plays a big role in not only women’s but men’s confidence and I love bringing that confidence out in people. I love when clients turn into friends…and I can honestly say all my regular clients have become good friends.

Emily began Renegade The Cuttery in 2014 out of a room in her family home. She stayed there for a year before opening a salon up in Glenelg – having only recently relocated to Lockleys.

Why did you decide to go out on your own?

I had worked for a number of salons by this point and wanted to learn and do more. Working alone gives me lots of creative freedom, not just with hair but with the business itself and I love to be involved in every part of it.

What’s your favourite part about your job?

It might sound cliché, but I truly enjoy every aspect of my job. I love meeting and networking with new and different people. We have so much talent here in Adelaide, and it’s awesome that so many girls out there are doing it for themselves!

A recent finalist in the Goldwell Color Zoom ‘18 Challenge, Marie launched her salon, Nortico Hair Lounge, on November 1st 2017.

Why did you decide to go out on your own?

I wanted to have a salon of my own for a long time and when the opportunity came up it was a ‘if I don’t do it now I never will’ moment. I needed to push myself – and my career – to the next level.

What’s your favourite part about your job?

The people. I love being able to do different styles on different people with different stories to tell and them leave feeling like they’ve had more than just their hair done.

With an abundance of experience, Alicia decided it was time to branch out on her own and launch Hair by Ali in April of 2016.

Why did you decide to go out on your own?

After being in the hair industry for 15 years and working across some of the best salons in Adelaide and Melbourne, I decided to branch out on my own and launch Hair by Ali. Working for myself as a freelance hair stylist gives me the freedom to run my own schedule; servicing clients in the salon whilst maintaining availability for fashion shoots or weddings styling.

What’s your favourite part about your job?

My favourite part of my job is being able to make people feel and look amazing on a daily basis. I get a lot of fulfilment from collaborating with other like-minded individuals in the creative world and seeing it all come together.

Yovanka has spent 25 years in the hair industry working on loyal clients and some of our favourite editorials. She made the decision to go out on her own last year, launching Yovanka Loria Salon in March 2017.

Why did you decide to go out on your own?

I have 2 little kids so I started my studio from home to be close to my family and do what I love to do. I was also ready to start building my own brand.

What’s your favourite part about your job?

I love everything about hair and I love empowering women to not only look beautiful but feel beautiful. I love our makeovers from start to finish, from our colour makeovers to my extensions makeovers – creating the ultimate blend is something I’m obsessed with. Also, I love my bridal hair styling – sharing the journey with my beautiful brides is so rewarding.
