Educated Eating At Alere

Alere Flinders University

Of all places for a unique eating experience, Flinders University wouldn’t exactly spring to mind. That’s all about to change with the introduction of a spate of new eateries opening up in the newly developed Hub. Go to the top floor and you’re greeted with panoramic views, soft timber tones and greenery, you’ve arrived at Alere, quite possibly Adelaide’s most refined on-campus venue.

It’s an ambitious project by Steve Blanco and Christopher Horner of Blanco Food & Events, but they’ve come from a history of heading some very successful places, most notably the Botanic Gardens Restaurant. With the help of Adelaide-originated global design firm, Woods Bagot, Alere’s design takes nothing away from the surrounding views and unique vantage point of the busy student hub. It’s minimalistic, but not in the sense of straight lines or monotones, rather a naturalesque approach to it.

Using a formula that’s taken the Botanic Gardens Restaurant to the upper echelons of Adelaide’s growing and competitive food scene head chefs; Kyle Wood, Michael Ielasi and Rohan Patil bring a menu focused on seasonal vegetables, grains and herbal ingredients with particular pride in ethically farmed produce – mainly opting for ingredients grown in the southern Adelaide region. While the wine list has both the big names and boutique options, there’s also the consideration of some organic and biodynamic wines, too.

It all comes together masterfully! Poached veal with capers, tuna emulsion mizuna and burnt lemon is an intriguing and well-executed combination. The slow cooked shoulder of lamb accompanied with cracked freekeh, mint, tahini and pickled cucumber leaves you wanting more, and to finish off, a gorgeous dessert of spiced pumpkin waffle complete with nutmeg cream and roasted walnuts that is perfectly described through photos.

With Alere, a Latin derivative, meaning ‘to feed or nourish’, there’s no arguments here. Try it for yourself at Flinders University – Registry Road, The Hub Level 2, Bedford Park.
