Laura Jayne Vince, head designer and owner of STONE The Label began her brand in Adelaide, debuting her first collection at Adelaide Fashion Festival back in 2016. The collection titled REPEAT was a combination of clean, monochrome lines with touches of orange and blue. Recently, Laura and her husband relocated to NYC and not long after STONE’s newest collection, DISCO, was released – a themed collection with a strong focus on gold shimmery mesh, contrasted with strong black and white pieces.
Amidst the hustle and bustle of NYC, Laura got a chance to have a quick chat with us about her newest collection and the future of STONE.
When and why did you start STONE?
I created STONE 3 years ago in 2015 while I was still completing my fashion bachelor in Adelaide. My love for creating clothes came about when I was just a teenager as my mum would always teach me how to sew and create my own dresses from scratch. Eventually as I finished high school I wanted to not just make clothes but create a brand and a culture. I thought a lot into the name and what it would stand for. STONE is one word, it’s bold, strong and timeless, which is exactly what our products represent and exactly what women are.
Who else is behind the scenes at STONE besides yourself?
It’s just me and my husband. We work so well together as a team. I design all the pieces and have more of a creative outlook on things and my husband runs our website and is the person I bounce most of my ideas off. We look forward to one day expanding and having many creative and talented people working with us.
What are some of your biggest fashion inspirations?
Whenever I am designing a new collection or coming up with ideas, I always find myself going back to the fabric. I love discovering new and interesting fabrics. I often sit at my desk with my fabric swatches [and] my sketch book and begin to feel the fabrics and imagine what and how they would look like draped on the body. From there my mind goes crazy as I start to add shapes and almost create a sort of “theme” for each collection. Our current collection is called ‘DISCO’ which was inspired by a gold shimmering mesh that I discovered and represents a chic 80s glam in the modern world.
What has been your proudest moment during your career?
We always get so excited and have a bit of a proud moment when we see celebrities and customers wearing our pieces all around the world. We recently saw Elle Ferguson, Jen Atkin & Danielle Bernstein wearing our latest collection to various events. For us this was such an achievement as we know so many women look to these ladies for fashion inspiration and it’s so cool to be a part of that.
What’s next for you and STONE?
At the begging of 2018, my husband and I made the big move to New York City after winning the Diversity Green Card Lottery. Through this once-in-a-life-time opportunity we got to launch STONE in the US market, which has been so beneficial and exciting for our brand. We are also excited for our next collection, which will include lots of tailoring and neutral colour palettes, just to give you a few hints!
