Girl Boss and Designer, Stephanie Chehade launched her namesake ready-to-wear label back in 2016 at New York Fashion Week and since then the brand has been expanding and evolving into an Adelaide household name. The Australian made pieces are luxury wardrobe essentials with a few signature styles − clean cuts, bold silhouettes and strong attention to detail. We caught up with Stephanie Chehade herself to chat more about her label and get a sneak peek of her new collection.
Who else makes up the team at STEPHANIE CHEHADE besides yourself?
STEPHANIE CHEHADE is owned and run by yours truly, Stephanie Chehade.
As well as designing, fabric sourcing and overseeing manufacturing here in Adelaide, I also take care of the day-to-day aspects of the business, such as website maintenance, online orders, social media, customer queries and everything in between!
When and why did you start the label?
I have always been very creative and had a great interest in fashion so it only seemed natural that I would pursue a career in the fashion industry. From completing an Advanced Diploma in Applied Fashion Design and Technology at TAFE SA in 2011, my first ready-to-wear (RTW) collection was launched late 2016.
Who is your biggest inspiration?
My biggest source of inspiration comes from street style; I love seeing what people wear and how they style their outfits. Brands that are currently inspiring me are; Jacquemus, Albus Lumen, Monse Maison and Marni.
How do you differ from other designers?
I design luxe wardrobe essentials for the contemporary woman, all made here in Australia. The focus is on quality not quantity. My capsule collections are made up of pieces that are unique and timeless but still current. The idea is that each collection builds on from the previous one and the aim is for my customers to create their own unique STEPHANIE CHEHADE Wardrobe!
What has been your proudest moment?
I have had many proud moments over the last two years, but if I had to choose one, it would be showcasing my first RTW collection in New York Fashion Week. That was something that I thought would only ever be a dream but to see that dream become a reality was a very rewarding experience and one I will never forget!
What’s next for Stephanie Chehade?
I am excited to be a part of the Adelaide Fashion Festival − this year will be my third year participating in the event where I will launch my latest collection in the SA Designer Showcase Runway. Following the release of my latest collection I am on the lookout for my next Pop Up Store location, which will most likely be interstate later this year or early next year.
I will also be expanding my garment range to include everyday basics − I have just launched my first t-shirt, the ‘S. Chehade Tee’ and it has been very well received!
Tell us about the new collection.
My direction for this collection has steered more towards natural fibres like linens and cottons and I am sourcing most my fabrics from dead stock to make use of unused fabric. The colour palette, like most of my collections, is neutral and earthy. The pieces are designed to be worn and styled together, which makes it all fun and the styles are named after Italian cities that I am dreaming of visiting.
