CLIQUE Picks: Hidden Travel Gems

Sponsored by Peregrine Travel.

As winter is edging near, those wanderlust sun-chasers among us start getting itchy feet for sojourns more exotic and luscious. Unfortunately for those seeking solitude, many other globetrotters have the same idea in mind for this time of year. While the upcoming months are perfect to escape our winter and be in beautiful weather abroad, peak season will have you peeking.

So we have spoken to the experts at Peregrine Travel Centre SA to devise an itinerary of places you can still travel to without the mob of Havi thongs, Bintang singlet’s and selfie sticks.

Morocco is a destination on the rise due to its appealing melting pot of culture – distinguished by Berber, Arabian and European influences. It is a feast for the eyes and senses with its colourful market places, epic mountain ranges, ancient cities, sweeping deserts and aromatic and spicy cuisine.

Must visit: Fez and Essaouira.

Peregrine’s Travel tip: Make sure you visit the seaside medina in Essaouira to taste some amazing handmande pastries from the family run bakeries and indulge in some fresh seafood straight from the sea to the grill.

The Caribbean island nation of Cuba is high on our bucket list, with its irresistible charm, culture and sandy beaches. Stumble upon tucked-away plazas, baroque churches, charming galleries and friendly bars and restaurants where the salsa music echoes out into the streets.

Must visit: Camaguey and Cienfuegos

Peregrine’s Travel tip: Access to money and ATM’s is limited in Cuba, we recommend changing money at the airport as you arrive.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is next on our list and is a must-see destination for those seeking a rich cultural experience. Sri Lanka is famed for it’s ancient Buddhist ruins that date back more than 2,000 years, not to mention the backdrop of diverse landscapes ranging from rainforests and vast plains to highlands and sandy beaches.

Must visit: Sigiriya and Kalpitiya Peninsula

Peregrine’s Travel tip: For a truly magical experience in Sigiriya, you can’t go past staying at The Elephant Corridor Hotel. Definitely worth the splurge!

Montenegro is a Balkan country with rugged mountains, medieval villages and a narrow strip of beautiful beaches along its serpentine Adriatic coastline. Dotted with coastal churches and fortified towns, Montenegro is bountiful with natural wonders of limestone peaks and glacial lakes.

Must visit: Bay of Kotor and Budva

Peregrine’s Travel Tip: Don’t leave without feasting on some delicious fresh seafood at one of the family run restaurants lining the picturesque coastline of Budva.

Chile stretches from the belly of South America to its foot, reaching from the driest desert on earth to vast southern glacial fields. Diverse and wild landscapes unfurl to create parched dunes, volcanoes, fertile valleys, pristine rivers ancient forests and gigantic glaciers.

Must visit:  San Pedro de Atacama and Patagonia

Peregrine’s Travel Tip: For those who are a little more adventurous, explore Patagonia’s breathtaking glacier filled scenery and clear your mind on a hike or trek through the mountain ranges.
