We all know that South Australia is an absolute food mecca, with so many great products (that have gained national and international recognition) being made right here in our own backyard. This week, you’ll be able to experience a snapshot of it when Tasting Australia hits our premier shopping destination, Rundle Mall and opens the Urban Pantry & Cellar Door.
So what is it exactly? It is a one-stop shop where you can sample all the tasty produce from across all South Australian regions and that are being featured in the festival. Think iconic brands like Maggie Beer, Beerenberg, Barossa Fine Foods and Haigh’s Chocolate, alongside Hills staple Udder Delights to everyone’s favourite Kangaroo Island Living Honey. And that’s just to name a few. You can come in, escape from the bustling Mall and be transported to regional South Australia to sample some of their best fare.
Alongside this tasting experience, the Urban Pantry will also play host to special tastings and live Q&As with some of South Australia (and Australia’s) leading producers and makers. Africola’s Duncan Welgemoed, Udder Delight’s cheese queen Sheree Sullivan and FINO Seppeltsfield’s Karen Romeo are just a few on the itinerary.
With so much on, we thought we’d pick out a few highlights so you have an idea of where to start.
The Grazing Trail
You know the Yellow Brick Road at the show? Well, this is like its fine food cousin. Start your journey at the Urban Pantry where you can pick up a bag and a map then go on a self-guided journey to discover Rundle Mall and the surrounding laneways and arcades, their hidden foodie gems and collect some take-home samples. The best thing though? It’s absolutely free and you get a pre-packed goodie bag to take home as well.
Friday, May 5-Sunday, May 7
Live Q&A with Duncan Welgemoed
Ever wanted to pick the brains of one of Australia’s top chefs? Well, you can at the Urban Pantry as Duncan joins in on Port Willunga Fine Foods Meet the Makers session. Whether you want to ask a question, listen in on a discussion about his cooking processes or just tell him how good your last meal at Africola was, this is your chance.
Saturday, 6 May from 12pm-12.30pm
Meet the Makers
Who said that a Tasting Australia event had to be all about the food? The Urban Pantry will also be running hour long ‘Meet the Makers’ sessions every day during the event where you can come in and sample the best wine, gins and beers that South Australia has to offer as well as meeting the brains behind each brand. Think Penfolds, Kangaroo Island Spirits and Pirate Life Brewing, among some other well known beverage makers.
