Cancer Council SA has teamed up with the Adelaide Strikers to give everyone the chance to bare it all on Adelaide Oval. 200 people will have the opportunity to drop their dacks and participate in the Undies Run in front of 40,000 screaming fans to raise important funds for the Cancer Council.
It’s a saucy event for a serious issue, bowel cancer is the second leading cause of death in South Australia, claiming over 400 lives every year. Cancer Council Chief Executive Lincoln Size says that even though the disease is one of the country’s biggest killers, “We know that 90 per cent of cases are treatable if caught early, which is why Undies Run is so important in raising awareness.”
“We’re excited to be joining with the Adelaide Strikers to host the event this year and know that through the event, we can start a powerful conversation, reduce the stigma around bowel cancer screening and ultimately save lives.”
Adelaide Strikers GM, Bronwyn Klei has expressed how excited the team is to participate in this year’s event and how important it is to get people involved to help educate others of the risks of bowel cancer and raise money to assist in further education and research.
Dimitri Sarris, a bowel cancer survivor who was diagnosed with Stage 3 bowel cancer at 27 years of age has been taking part in the event since 2016 and is passionate about sharing his story to help educate others on the importance of awareness.
“I was fit and healthy, exercised regularly, never smoked or took drugs and had rarely any symptoms, just a small amount of blood when I went to the toilet. There wasn’t a lot of blood and it wasn’t regular either. I went to the doctor and was shocked to discover that the symptoms were a result of bowel cancer.”
