If you haven’t heard of Alpha Box & Dice, then obviously you don’t know your whites and reds! The winery located in McLaren Vale, AB&D is undergoing some changes and have recently appointed a new head winemaker, Sam Berketa. We sat down with the young and strapping Sam to discuss his new role at the company.
So before we start, tell us a little about yourself…
Ah, where do I start? I’m a 26-year-old Adelaide boy that found a passion for getting my hands dirty in a career path that constantly challenges and excites me. I’m basically a science nerd with a creative streak.
A big congratulation is in order for your new position as head winemaker at AB&D! What was your initial reaction to the amazing news?
Shock and excitement – it’s super humbling to be offered this position so early in my career! I’m very lucky to be able to make wine with such an awesome group of people and for such an amazing brand.
What are your plans for the company’s future?
To continue making wines that are interesting and educational, by showcasing the varietal characteristics of some of the lesser-known labels which are relatively new to Australia, such as: nero d’Avola, dolcetto and aglianico. After that, we’ll just have to see.
And what is your top wine pick from AB&D?
Well, I love the Siren Nero d’Avola because it’s got the varietal characters of lavender and beeswax going on that’s so different to your standard flavour profile – it always makes me happy.
Don’t forget to check out the new food menu at Alpha Box & Dice, with ingredients prepared by Africola’s Duncan Welgemoed – basically the best Brisket Rueben and cheese toasted sandwiches you’ll ever find.
They also have some of their old favourite wines coming back such as: Kit & Kaboodle, Enigma, Apostle and Hercules are all coming back in the next few weeks!
