5 things we loved from Fashion month

As September draws to a close so does a month of fashion rolling across the globe starting in The Big Apple and concluding in the City of Love. September in the fashion industry is known for being the agenda-setting calendar month where designers and their respective labels or houses showcase their Spring/Summer 2020 collections and highlight what we can expect to see seeping through onto pages of magazines and, in our digital age, into our Instagram feeds.

Spring/Summer 2020 was no different across the runways of New York, London, Milan and Paris with experimental, bold and opulent collections aplenty and an underscoring theme of sustainability and consciousness towards environmental impact also filtering through the cluster of four weeks of fashion. From celebrity cameos, supermodels closing standout shows and ‘it’ shoes being reworked, we take a look at our five key moments from fashion month for 2019.

Bottega Venetta will continue its meteoric rise as the trending it-brand

Bottega Venetta has gradually reached new heights throughout 2019 and can be credited with the rise of the extremely strappy heel that has spawned many a counterfeit offering to sate the masses- almost every colour of the eponymous shoe has a hefty waitlist for orders!

At the SS20 showing at Milan Fashion Week, Creative Director Daniel Lee launched their new padded double strap mule to much fanfare from fashion editors, models and influencers alike, along with a fresh take on the square-toed heel. A braided leather top handle bag was also a noteworthy included accessory for the showing that featured rib-knit dresses, cut-out silhouettes and understated shirt dresses.

Christopher Kane coined a new state of being with a conscious motive

The title of the Christopher Kane SS20 collection is ‘Eco-sexual’ which perfectly encapsulates the direction the Scottish brand is currently undertaking. After co-opting the phrase ‘More joy!’ from the Masters and Johnson 1970s sex manual and placing a greater emphasis on environmental impact, Kane and his sister Tammy presented a collection designed for people ‘who love nature’ and about being in touch with earth.

Highlights of the London Fashion Week showcase included printed motifs of London Fields, exaggerated necklines and an interpolation of both vibrant and moodier hued colours.

Anthony Vaccarello at Saint Laurent takes centre stage as the darling of the French fashion houses

If Naomi Campbell is the closing model of your collection, you are guaranteed heavy press coverage and the eyes of the world on your brand. Yet, for Anthony Vaccarello at Saint Laurent, the eyes of the world were already watching to see the Italian designer reinvent the legendary French fashion house once again for SS20.

Reinventions of the classic Le Smoking suit featured aplenty on a water-filled runway overlooking the Eiffel Tower in the heart of Paris Fashion Week. Jumpsuits, Grecian-like draped gowns and a high prescription of black sequins were in order along with sheer blouses and minimalistic beauty notes.

Brandon Maxwell reinvented the All-American woman

Brandon Maxwell may be best known for Lady Gaga’s over-the-top four outfit extravaganza at the 2019 MET Gala but the American designer proved his versatility and form at his SS20 showing at New York Fashion Week. A departure for his popular red carpet garments, the designer presented a collection comprising of tonal hues paired with denim while flirting with shades of seafoam and apricot nectar.

An iteration of the All-American woman’s wardrobe with a 2020 twist.
